Designing the Perfect Pizza Oven

If you have been dreaming of having a pizza oven in your outdoor kitchen, you may be wondering what it’s design entails.  There are a number of styles and looks you can choose from, but most wood-fired pizza ovens are dome shaped and can either be built as a DIY project or you can hire an experienced mason to do the job for you.

If you are thinking of building the oven yourself, you should note that you want to make sure you really know what you’re doing before you tackle the project.  Since fire will be burning inside the oven, you want to ensure it’s built properly and will not only be safe but will cook your food well.  Most people opt to have a mason build pizza ovens for them, but if you are experienced with masonry materials, feel free to pick up the materials you need and a set of plans to get yourself started.

Dome-shaped brick pizza ovens are designed to heat up quickly and retain heat efficiently.  This leads to the type of quick cooking process that makes crusts come out crispy and food taste delicious.

To build the oven, you’ll need firebricks, cooking floor tiles, high temperature mortar and insulation. If you don’t want to design the oven out of bricks, it can also be made from clay or concrete. You can make the exterior of the oven as basic or decorative as you want, as long as the interior of the cooking dome and floor are made of the proper materials.

Many people choose to incorporate the design of their pizza oven into the overall design of their outdoor kitchens or patios.  Since the ovens are usually not created as a standalone element, it makes your backyard look more aesthetically pleasing if the design of the oven is coordinated with the design of nearby features.

No matter how you design your fire pit pizza oven, and whether you choose to build it yourself or prefer to have a professional do it for you, there’s little doubt that you, your family and friends will enjoy cooking in this outdoor cooking feature for years to come.
