Address Drainage Issues Before Hurricane Season

Residents of New Jersey and Staten Island unfortunately know quite well how devastating water can be from hurricanes and other storms such as Superstorm Sandy.  Although no amount of proper drainage could protect many from the wrath of a storm as powerful as Sandy, the fact is that a great deal of damage can occur from water and other climate conditions that are far less severe than what was experienced along our coasts in the fall of 2012.  The key to providing as much protection as possible for your home and business from the ill effects of water is to address any drainage issues now, before the height of the storm season kicks into gear.

Water is no joke and when water does not properly drain it can wreak havoc with your property, your home, your business and even your cars or other vehicles.  Fortunately, many water issues can be fixed by bringing in a drainage specialist who can assess any potential problems and provide solutions that will allow water to be something that your grass loves while you don’t cringe as it falls.

The key is to come up with a preventative drainage design that addresses the slope of your property, the quality of your soil and other factors that can impact the ability for the ground to adequately soak up or divert water that falls from the sky without causing problems.  This can include things like addressing low spots in the yard that need to be built up with additional dirt or re-grading land so that it slopes away from homes, buildings or other structures.

You also may need to have individual drains or a full drainage system installed in order to move water away from trouble spots to where it will not cause problems.  This can be done with the installation of options such as French drains, trench drains and surface drains, among others.  A professional contractor will be able to assess your property and water problems and then recommend the best solution to meet your needs.

By being proactive now, before the height of the summer storm and hurricane season, you will put yourself in a good position to weather out the storm without panicking over what all that moisture will do to your home.  You will no longer have to worry about issues such as flooded basements, foundation damage, mold formation, stagnant water and other issues that can occur from excessive or standing water.

No one likes to put money into things around the house that they can’t really see or enjoy.  But sometimes it’s necessary to make sure that things are working properly “behind the scenes” so that you can enjoy the beauty and functionality of your home.  Dealing with drainage issues now is one such step you can take so that you don’t have to worry about the impact water can have on your home.  Then next time it rains, you can just curl up and listen to the pitter patter of the raindrops as they fall against the window, without having a care in the world.
